On November 26, 2012 Gene Spinelli and 9 other amateur radio operators (from 5 different countries) sailed to Campbell Island aboard the Dunedin based 82 foot ketch "Evohe". Along with the
boat's crew of 6 and 1 officer from the New Zealand Department of Conservation the team established amateur radio stations on the island and made 43,500 contacts with "hams" all around the world.
Due to a
storm in the Southern Ocean our arrival on the island was delayed 3 days, what was planned to be a 2 day transit took 5 days. Some of you may recall, this journey from Dunedin took less than 24 hours on a DER. We departed from
Bluff (Invercargill), New Zealand and landed Campbell Island at Perseverance Harbor on Dec. 1, 2012.
