These commemorative covers were from the Calcaterra’s Deep Freeze deployment, 1965-1966. I had lunch with the collector that owns these covers and couldn’t “negotiate them away! He works for Raytheon Polar Services and “summers over” on the ice, for the past 13, or so, years.
During the period August 3 – 4, 1968 USS Calcaterra engaged with a Russian ship during the launch of a Posiden Missile of the coast of Florida. While these scans are poor, if you read them in the order as numbered, you’ll get the story of what happened.
